An Introduction To The Spaetzle Maker
As You would expect, a Spaetzle Maker is a device which assists in the making of a dish called Spaetzle. For those who don’t know, Spaetzle is a speciality in countries such as Germany, Austria and Hungary and is similar to noodles or pasta.
A basic Spaetzle recipe consists of flour, eggs, water, and salt but their are many variations on the recipe depending on region and taste. The dough created in the cooking of Spaetzle is similar to that of pasta but needs to be more moist and soft and therefore cannot be rolled in the same way as pasta. For this reason their are a number approaches to handling the dough which usually requires a Spaetzle Maker.
Types Of Spaetzle Maker
Spaetzle Lid
The Spaetzle Lid is a device which has lots of small holes and that is placed over a pot of boiling water. The dough is placed on top of the lid and a scraper is used to force it through the small holes and into the water below. The dough should hit the water in longish thin strips.
Sliding Spaetzle Maker
A Sliding Spaetzle Maker is similar to a cheese greater with a sliding compartment attached. It works by placing the dough into the compartment and then sliding it up and down the grater whilst over the boiling water. This action forces the dough through the holes and into the water where it is cooked.
Spaetzle Press
The Spaetzle Press is just the same as a ricer. The dough is placed into a compartment with holes at the bottom and a lid is forced down via a handle. This forces the mixture through the holes at the bottom where it ends up falling in long strips into the boiling water.
